Ten Final Tips for making your Facebook Experience Fantastic

Posted by: asuccessfulwoman on: December 15, 2008

I’ve written two other guides to using Facebook:

Beginner level – How to Deal with Facebook: My Top Ten Tips for Beginners

Intermediate level – Ten More Tips for Using Facebook

Now it’s time to go into my final top ten tips for making your Facebook experience professional, smooth, and enjoyable.

You may bookmark this list and come back to it as a reference.

21) Give some Gifts The Facebook Gift Shop is one of those extra applications that can brighten someone else’s day. You may “give a gift” of one of the images on the site, some free and some paid, and that gift will appear in your recipient’s wall listing. You may make a gift private or public and you may also add a personalized message, if you wish.

22) Use your former name or “handle”. If more people would recognize you through your maiden name, or if you have a user handle that you use all the time (I use “monicadear”), then you’ll be able to put this information into your profile. Go to “Settings” then “Name” and “change” to see options such as Middle Name, Full Former Name, or Display Full Name.

23) E-mail notifications make it easy. Within “Settings” you may also change the “Notifications” (third tab) that you receive. For example, I’ve turned all my e-mail notifications OFF, except for birthday reminders. It’s a helpful way to reduce your e-mail and get only the messages you want to receive.

24) On the go: FB and your mobile phone.

Within “Settings”, activate the “Mobile” notification to use Facebook Mobile. This service allows you to send text messages from Facebook to your phone, such as friend requests, messages, wall posts, and status updates. You may also upload your photos or videos directly from your phone to your account.

25) Block Unsavories. By now you probably have a good sense of the privacy functions within Facebook. I periodically return and doublecheck my settings: “Settings” and then “Privacy Settings”. In the box at the bottom, you may “Block People” and they will not be able to see you within the Facebook environment.

26) Start a Group! From your “Home” page, you have an opportunity, within the “Applications” section, to set up a new “Group.” A group in Facebook is just like a group in real life: it’s a gathering of people interested in a particular idea, issue, cause. The “Group” page has a Wall, video and photo upload, and most importantly group Discussions on any and all topics related to the group. If you are the creator of the group or an administrator, you will have access to all group functionalities. You may also appoint other members to be administrators or officers.

Within the Search bar, you’ll find thousands of different groups that have been set up for different interests. You can search mine by looking for “A Successful Woman.”

27) Discuss amongst yourselves. Within “Groups” you may participate, follow, or review different topics for discussion. Note that each discussion topic is also viewable in search engines so refrain from posting private information like e-mail addresses. Administrators of groups may decide what kinds of privileges are available to non-group members.

28) Facebook for Business. The Pages section is a great way to promote your company or business.

If you’re an official representative for your company or brand, you may set up a “Page” about your business and recruit fans to that page. It’s a nice addition to your website or blog and you’ll have the opportunity to “send a message” to all fans when needed. If you’re an administrator for the page, Facebook allows you to purchase advertising and view pageview statistics.

29) Facebook knows people you may know. When you first log on to your “Home” page, there is a little section on the right hand bottom that lists “People you may know.” The social search mechanism identifies potential friends for you based on your mutual friends. If you see someone you recognize and know well, consider clicking “Add as Friend”.

30) Create a profile “Badge” to spread the word. If you have other websites, blogs, or places to share your information, you may go to your Profile page and scroll down: on the left hand side below all your left-hand side boxes, look for “Create a Profile Badge.” When you create a badge, you are able to create a little graphic (or javascript link) that links back to your Facebook page.
